How to read Central Desktop Calendars via Google Calendar

1. Log in to your Google Calendar and click:  Settings >> Calendars >> Other Calendar's (add)

2.  Click "Public Calendar Address" (its the fourth tab option):

3.  Log in to Central Desktop, navigate to the Workspace Calendar that you want to view in Google Calendar.

From the More Actions menu in the upper right corner, click the "iCal Calendar Subscription" link:

4.  Choose the activities you wish to view in Google Calendar from the options available:

Events & Milestones, MIlestones or Events Only.

Right-click on the desired calendar link and "Copy Shortcut" or "Copy Link Location."

5.  Now, go back to Google Calendar and paste the iCal URL into the blank field, click ADD and click OK.

Depending on the number of activities in the Central Desktop calendar it may take a few seconds to import the Calendar into Google.

We STRONGLY ADVISE that you do NOT check the box that says "Allow others to find this public calendar via Google Calendar search?")

6.  Be sure to enable the calendar in the bottom left corner of the Google Calendar Home screen.  The Calendar should look something like this:

7.  The Central Desktop Calendar will appear under "Other Calendars" Tab in the Settings Section.  You can remove the Calendar or Hide the calendar from this screen.

Troubleshooting help:  You may need to change the prefix from "webcal://" to "http://"

Tips:

1.  You can subscribe to multiple Central Desktop Workspace Calendars with Google Calendar.

2.  You can also subscribe to "My Calendar" (a private and personal CD Calendar) from Central Desktop Dashboard as well.

Recurring items don't seem to transfer to Google properly - only the first occurrence. Is this a known problem? Is there a way round it?
Comment by Arnulf Hsu on Jan 19:
We just fixed the recurring problem. You may need to relink your ical feed. If it is not fixed in Google, google is still caching an old copy of the feed. I think google refreshes the feed a couple of times per day .

Is it possible to transfer events from GCalendar to Cetral Desktop and is there an opportunity to automate this process?

There is no automated way to export Google Calendar Items into CD at this time. This may be available in the future.

As a work around to not being able to keep time on tasks, I'm using google calendar for this.  Can you all make it to where tasks are also imported to the google calendar through Ical?  That would save me double entry.

Thanks,

While it is true that you cannot import Google calendar events into your CD calendar, what you might consider doing is adding an html iframe to one of your wiki pages in CD and making the iframe source Google Calendar. That essentially allows you to view and manipulate your Google calendar right within CD. If you also sync from the CD calendar up to your Google calendar, then using an iframe to embed your Google Calendar in CD allows you to use one calendar in CD that would show both CD and Google calendar events. I have not thought through how it would all work with multiple calendars in multiple workspaces, but I believe each workspace will show up as a separate calendar in Google calendar.

To embed you iframe code, just edit any wiki page where you want the calendar to show up (you could even create a custom wiki tab and call it "Calendar"), go into the HTML code view and paste the following code in where you want your Google calendar to show up:

<iframe width="1000" height="600" frameborder="0" src="https://www.google.com/calendar">Alternative text for browsers that do not understand IFrames.</iframe>

You can adjust the width and height by changing out those values.

Save your page and either the Google calendar login page or your Google calendar will show up depending on whether your browser has your current Google/GMail session saved or not. It's working for me like a charm.
